Our love for fried food in New Orleans can take years off of our lives

A study in the BMJ establishes what we already know, that fried food can be detrimental to our health.  This particular study confirms that for women.... since the females took part in the study, although it affects everybody.

Dr. Henry Nuss, nutritional scientist at LSU Health New Orleans School of Public Health, says this doesn't bode well for our love of fried chicken and fried fish here in Louisiana.

"It does not, and you know, I was just thinking to myself that I would treat myself to a fried shrimp poboy today, but it makes you think twice about it," Nuss laughed.

But the fried foods are high in trans fans and builds up plaque in the arteries, restricting blood flow.

"It can result in catastrophic heart failure," Nuss said.

"In the study, they looked at fried shellfish, oysters, shrimp, they looked at fried fish, tacos, tortilla chips, anything that's fried, but you know we love our fried foods down here in New Orleans," Nuss said.  "I think the bottom line is, in moderation, you can still enjoy these things."
