Melissa Rivas rolled up her sleeve so Tracy Bourg, NP, could administer her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Just after 1:00 p.m., Bourg injected the 20,000th COVID vaccination at the LSU Health New Orleans Clinic at 2020 Gravier Street. It was quite an accomplishment for an initiative that began as a Closed Point of Dispensing and evolved into an open site vaccinating all eligible members of the public.

Highlights over the past five months include vaccinating scores of health care professionals who have been taking care of patients with COVID throughout the pandemic, hundreds of City of New Orleans employees, including the New Orleans Police Department and the Sewerage & Water Board, as well as the Office of the District Attorney. About a hundred Louisiana State Police also received their vaccinations at the Clinic, along with New Orleans cultural treasures and members of the general public. Exclusively using the Pfizer vaccine, LSU Health was also among the first to vaccinate adolescents ages 12 and up.

The Clinic is a collaboration of the LSU Healthcare Network and the LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing. Many faculty, staff and students have volunteered to staff the Clinic and keep the vaccine flowing, in addition to their regular responsibilities.

“We are so proud of our team’s tireless dedication to providing this life-saving protection to so many,” says Dr. Larry Hollier, LSU Health New Orleans Chancellor. “Their unflagging efforts really showcase the LSU Health New Orleans tradition of giving back. We owe them all a huge debt of gratitude.”

COVID is a preventable disease. Vaccination is the best way to protect health. It is critical that as many people as possible be vaccinated now since variants of concern, which are more contagious and more dangerous, are circulating in our communities.
