Romantic comedies and TV may give the impression that ladies are more into Valentine's day than the cloddish men in their lives, but according to a survey done for Groupon, it's the men who care more. A separate survey done by Bankrate shows men typically spend more on it, too.

"A lot of people hope this holiday will spark new romance in a relationship, so it's possible that men have higher hopes for the romantic aspect to come from Valentine's Day," said LSU Health New Orleans clinical psychologist and relationship expert Michelle Moore. Dr. Moore says expectations about Valentine's Day also varies by age.

"Younger couples, young individuals have a higher expectation than older individuals do from Valentine's Day as a holiday," she said.

Moore says couples shouldn't focus on who gets what, anyway, and make it about being together: "Other people see it as a relationship for the couple, and doing something together."

Moore says society may have put pressure on men to go all out on behalf of their paramours, but she says, like in any gift-giving situation, just be thoughtful.
