This time of year, Mardi Gras revelry can often result in some morning-after misery.

Carnival season is prime time for those after-party hangovers in New Orleans. But, there are some ways to ease the pain.

There are, of course, a number of old wives' tales about hair-of-the dog and such. And, a lot of locals swear by soups like Vietnamese Pho, or Mexican Menudo.

"There are some ways to try to help when you have a hangover. And, some of the local cures may have some merit," says Dr. Benjamin Springgate, Chief of Community and Population Medicine at LSU Health New Orleans.

He notes that Yaka Mein is also known as 'Old Sober'. A steaming bowl of salty soup also contains a lot of electrolytes that help restore blood sugar lost in a night of Mardi Gras revelry.

"Really, anything that offers that balance of fluids, electrolytes and something to give you a little bit of sugar to raise your blood sugar.

Dr. Springate says a big, healthy breakfast is always helpful.

"And, if your blood sugar is low, you're probably going to appreciate having that hot sausage po-boy."
